Strahov Monastery Library

Friday, September 23, 2:30 p.m.

Visit the biggest monastic library in the Czech Republic in the still active Royal Canonry of Premonstratensians at Strahov in Prague. Then you can visit some other parts of the monastery which were built in the 1140s.  After the tour it is possible to taste the local beer brewed in the monastic brewery.

Czech National Library – medieval manuscripts

Friday, September 23, 9:00, 10:00, and 11:00 a.m.

Excursion to the Manuscripts and Early Printed Books department of the Czech National Library in Prague’s Clementinum. Afterwards there is also the possibility to visit its Baroque library hall.

Nostic Library

Nostická knihovna

Placed in an early Baroque building, former residence of the noble family of Nostitz-Rieneck, which is now home to the Czech Ministry of Culture, the precious library is normally closed to public.

Prague Castle (must-see attractions)

Guided tour of Prague Castle with a general overview of its history, including the entrance to St. Vitus Cathedral, Old Royal Palace, St. George’s Basilica & Golden Lane.

Prague Castle in detail (History Museum & Cathedral Treasury)

Visit of the less touristy parts of Prague Castle with a guided tour through the exhibition The Story of Prague Castle in the medieval rooms of the Old Royal Palace showing the development of the castle and many original artefacts from its 1000 years long history. Afterwards you can also visit the exhibition of The Treasure of St. Vitus Cathedral, the largest church treasury in the Czech Republic and one of the most extensive in Europe housing some of the masterpieces produced during the era of Charles IV (1346–1378) such us the Bohemian Coronation Cross, the crystal jug for storing the tablecloth from the Last Supper, and many others.

Jewish Town of Prague

Guided tour including the visit of the early-Gothic Old-New Synagogue and the Old Jewish Cemetery founded in the 1430s.

Old Town Hall

The medieval town hall of the Old Town of Prague famous for its Astronomical clock was founded in 1338. The guided tour includes the historical halls with the chapel, the tower and the underground areas.

St. Agnes Convent & Czech medieval art exhibition

Guided visit of the medieval Convent of St. Agnes of Bohemia, the oldest preserved Gothic architectural complex in Prague, which houses the permanent exhibition “Medieval Art in Bohemia and Central Europe 1200–1550” of the National Gallery Prague.

In the footsteps of Jan Hus: Bethlehem Chapel & Collegium Carolinum

Visit the most important places linked with the life of Jan Hus in Prague: The Bethlehem Chapel where the famous church reformer preached to the crowds and the oldest building of Prague’s University (the so-called Collegium Carolinum, Charles’ College) associated with his academic career. In both buildings, there are little museums about their history.

Emmaus Abbey

Founded in 1347 by Charles IV for Benedictine monks of the Eastern Rite brought in from Dalmatia and Croatia who used Old Church Slavonic as liturgical language. Later it became the only Hussite monastery. The cloister is decorated with a cycle of 85 Gothic wall paintings with parallels from the Old and New Testaments.

Břevnov Abbey

The Benedictine Archabbey of Břevnov is the oldest surviving monastery in Bohemia founded in 993. Except the preserved Romanesque crypt from the 11th century, most of the buildings are Baroque from the 18th century. After the tour you can find a place in the local monastic brewery which has the oldest tradition of beer brewing in the Czech Republic.

Boat Tour & Charles Bridge Museum

Take a 45-minute boat tour on the River Vltava, cruise to a water channel called Prague Venice and admire the Gothic Charles Bridge from below. See the only preserved arch of the older Romanesque Judith Bridge and visit the little Charles Bridge Museum inside the former hospital rooms of the Monastery of the Knights of the Cross with the Red Star.
